Emma skipped excitedly into her bedroom after finishing her dinner. Today was Show and Tell day at school tomorrow and she couldn't wait to bring in her big box of crayons to share. Emma loved to color more than anything else in the world. The walls of her room were covered in bright, happy pictures she had drawn over the years.
As soon as she entered her room, Emma made a beeline for her coloring supplies. She opened up he closet and pulled out the giant crayon-shaped plastic container that held her prized 120-pack of crayons. They were organized neatly by color, sharpened to a perfect point and ready for creating magic.
Emma lifted the lid and gazed at the rows of crayons like jewels, gleaming in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple and every color in between. "Hi crayons, are you ready for an adventure tomorrow?" Emma said. The crayons didn't reply, but Emma imagined they were excited too. She picked out a few of her favorites - Tickle-Me-Pink, Banana Mania and Macaroni-and-Cheese - and brought them over to her coloring table.
The sun was beginning to set outside Emma's window as she started coloring a picture of a unicorn jumping over a rainbow. The sky transformed into watercolor swirls of orange, pink and purple. Emma was just starting to color the rainbow stripes when she noticed the crayons moving on their own! She jumped back in surprise as the crayons started to wiggle gently. Then, one by one, they stood up on their paper tips and started walking around!
"Oh my goodness, the crayons are alive!" Emma gasped. She couldn't believe her eyes. The crayons turned toward her and smiled, as if this was perfectly normal for them.
Tickle-Me-Pink curtsied politely in her direction. "Hello Emma, we heard this was Show and ll day tomorrow, so we thought we'd come out to play!"
Banana Mania did a silly dance on the desk. "We wanted to stretch our crayon legs and have an adventure with you!" Macaroni-and-Cheese spun in a circle on one foot. "Will you draw with us?" he asked.
Emma could hardly contain her excitement. "Of course!" she exclaimed. This was better than any dream she could imagine. Her crayons had come to life!
Emma cleared a space on her desk as the crayons lined up, ready to go. She decided to draw one big, magical crayon world that they could all play in together. Emma started with a blue sky and fluffy white clouds, using Sky Blue and Cloud White to fill it in. Mr. Sky Blue and Mr. Cloud White happily floated up to color it.
Next Emma drew a bright green meadow filled with multicolored flowers. She used Fuchsia, Dandelion, Spring Green and Orange to color in the petals. The crayon colors pranced through the meadow leaving trails of color in their wake. Banana Mania stopped to take a silly sniff of a dandelion, leaving big yellow powder spots on his nose.
For the finishing touch, Emma drew a rainbow arching over the horizon. She took out every color in the rainbow - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple - and let them color it in. As they filled in each stripe, the rainbow magically lifted off the page and became 3D!
Now the crayon world was complete! Emma and her crayon friends spent the rest of the evening playing and exploring together. They painted colorful murals, planted impossible gardens, and splashed through rainbow puddles.
As the moon rose outside, the crayons started looking sleepy. Tickle-Me-Pink let out a big yawn. "I think it's time for us to go back in our box," she said. The other crayons nodded in agreement.
Emma was sad to say goodbye but knew they needed their rest for the big Show and Tell tomorrow. She put each crayon back in their proper place and closed the lid.
"Goodnight crayons, I can't wait for our next adventure!" Emma said. She tucked the crayon box under her arm and quickly fell asleep, dreaming about the magical evening.
The next day at school, Emma could hardly wait for her turn at Show and Tell. Finally the teacher called her name. Emma held up the crayon box proudly. "I brought my favorite crayons to share," she announced.
As Emma described how much she loved coloring, she secretly hoped this would be the moment the crayons came back to life. But the box remained still.
After class, Emma sighed as she put the crayon box back in her backpack. "It must have been just a dream," she thought.
Later at home, Emma took out the crayons to work on a drawing before bedtime. As she sharpened a crayon, she was surprised to see a little smiley face appear on the tip along with a wink. Emma grinned back. She had a feeling there were more magical adventures to come with her crayons.
